********** MOVIE OF THE MONTH **********

Mad Max: Fury Road
Released 02/09
IMDB – 8.3/10 and #104, RT – 98%, Moviedoc – ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ½

Not just the most breathtaking action films of 2015, Mad Max: Fury Road is one of the best films in 2015. What it omits in narrative is more than made up for by way of its unrelenting and outstanding chase and set-piece sequences. Pay particular attention to the detail in Fury Road’s art direction (its props especially) and outstanding cinematography. The cherry on top? Charlize Theron in the lead role – simply awesome. If you somehow missed this at cinemas, it’s one to watch now!

********** MOVIE OF THE MONTH **********

San Andreas
Released 30/09
IMDB – 6.4/10, RT – 50%, Moviedoc – ♥ ♥ ♥

Funnily enough, this action blockbuster movie starring Dwayne Johnson was released in cinemas almost simultaneously as the shoddy straight-to-DVD version titled San Andreas Quake! Whatever you do, don’t confuse the two! Expect ridiculous and expect a lot of disaster. This isn’t just a quake movie! It’s the Fast & Furious of disaster movies, and it’s entertaining guilty pleasure!

ACTION / COMEDY

Spy
Released 30/09
IMDB – 7.3/10, RT – 94%, Moviedoc – ♥ ♥ ½

This will be one of the more overrated movies of the year for me. Melissa McCarthy is in good form as a CIA analyst who goes undercover and Rose Byrne a very effective villain. There are some good laughs and entertaining action stand-off’s, however Spy struggles to work all its goods consistently. Considering who the makers and stars of this film are, this should have been much better than what it is.

ACTION / SCI-FI

Ex-Machina
Released 10/09
IMDB – 7.7/10, RT – 92%, Moviedoc – ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

An engaging and intelligent film that’s presents and executes its concept in a most skillful and clever manner. Maintains its mystique throughout as computer programmer Caleb participates in an experiment to assess the human qualities of a female A.I. Highly recommended.

Comedy

Gemma Bovery
Released 02/09
IMDB – 6.4/10, RT – 52%, Moviedoc – ♥ ♥ ♥ ½

From the overrated Spy to the underrated Gemma Bovery. Martin (an excellent Fabrice Luchini), an aging Parisian and casual observer notices his new English neighbours share more than a surname in common with his favourite novel by celebrated author Gustave Flaubert. The experience for you to be ready for from Gemma Bovery is delicious comedy, plenty of charm and a darker turn in its finale.

Drama

The Age of Adaline
Released 09/09
IMDB – 7.3/10, RT – 54%, Moviedoc – ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

A young woman is rendered ageless after a series of events and one man may be the key to changing that fortune, or misfortune, in The Age of Adaline. Reminded me of one of my favourites – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by way of the cinematography and the comforting nature it narrates the story. Even though the premise is barely credible, there is something beautiful unfolding at all times in this romantic drama that brings out the best from Blake Lively in the lead role. Co-stars Harrison Ford in one of his better parts of late too. Give this a go!

Family

Shaun The Sheep Movie
Released 24/09
IMDB – 7.4/10, RT – 99%, Moviedoc is yet to see this film

Very strong critic and audience word of mouth surrounding Shaun The Sheep Movie. The stop-motion animation from Aardman  (Who brought us Wallace and Gromit & Chicken Run), the humour and warmth of what appears to be a simple story about a sheep who just wants the day off but gets into all sorts of mayhem sounds like a true winner to me for all the family. Looking forward to watching this myself!

Tomorrowland
Released 30/09
IMDB – 6.6/10 , RT – 50%, Moviedoc is yet to see this film

An inventor and scientifically curious teen team up to discover the secrets of a place that only exists in their collective memory. Unfortunately, this Disney Action/Adventure starring George Clooney was a bit of a dud at the box office. Could very well be worth the watch if found by the right audience so if the plot and genre appeals, I’d suggest hiring it and giving it a shot. I certainly will be.

Thriller/Horror

Unfriended
Released 10/09
IMDB – 5.9/10, RT – 60%, Moviedoc – ♥ ♥ ♥

Unfriended brings something new to the horror genre. Filmed within numerous chat channels and social media outlets, it is online, all the time in this cyber-natural (that’s the American title – Cybernatural) thriller. It must be acknowledged for its risk, ambition and attention-to-detail. While not so scary at all and sometimes quite exhausting to watch, Unfriended is always identifiable, very natural and rarely let’s go of your attention. Should fare quite well on DVD, and that’s a very good 3 heart rating!

Other titles to be released in September are:
Kumiko: The Treasure Hunter (02/09), The Duke of Burgandy (02/09), Hot Tub Time Machine 2 (02/09), Clouds of Sils Maria (16/09 and ♥ ♥ ½), Avengers: Age of Ultron (16/09 and ♥ ♥ ♥ ), Entourage (16/09), Child 44 (23/09), The Book of Life (23/09) and Infinitely Polar Bear (23/09)
