Dual Oscar winner Robert Redford is going one on one with nature, of late. Nominated for a Golden Globe for his solo ocean outing in the recent ALL IS LOST, Redford takes to the 2,200 mile Appalachian trail, albeit with the company of lifelong friend Stephen (Nick Nolte), in A WALK IN THE WOODS. Redford is Bill Bryson, a married author who sets out to hike the Appalachian in hope it will help him reconnect with his American roots.

Although the many dangers throughout the Appalachian make the occasional appearance in A WALK IN THE WOODS, the film’s intent is to keep its feet safely planted on the beginner’s track at all times. The openly light-hearted approach, a nimble screenplay and warm performances from its three leads (The third being the wife of Bill, played by Emma Thompson) ensure Bill & Stephen’s adventure never becomes too deep a journey. Where there is a clear objective to Bill’s need for the journey, A WALK IN THE WOODS’ screenplay walks a little too broad during the middle act and our characters’ moment of epiphany feels all too elusive. Nonetheless, a reassuring 104 minute running time maintains the films’ enjoyment all throughout.

Footnote to Parents
Moderate offensive language including sexual references throughout. A film better appreciated for a more mature audience anyway.
