THE GIFT presents to us the feature film directional debut of Australian actor Joel Edgerton. The star of blockbuster hit EXODUS: GODS & KINGS and the Australian classic that went worldwide, ANIMAL KINGDOM also writes the original screenplay and stars in this film. In this mystery thriller from the US, married couple Simon & Robyn’s (Jason Bateman & Rebecca Hall) lives take some unforeseen and tragic turns when a mysterious stranger named Gordo (Edgerton), who is from Simon’s past, brings back a terrible secret thought to be buried over 20 years ago.

The Gift Film PosterIf you’re a moviegoer who quite likes a film that can put a chill up his/her spine, then you’ll want to get onto unwrapping THE GIFT very soon! This mystery-laden drama is filled with numerous suspenseful sequences that made the cinema audience I attended with scream on more than one occasion! Edgerton’s screenplay is a cleverly thought-out, well-dispersed thrill ride with a handful of impressive trick’s up its sleeve. As expected from this genre of film, THE GIFT maintains its mystique and intrigue by keeping its best secrets well under wraps for the first hour or so. In a climatic finale, this engrossing film remains heavily unpredictable yet completely logical and is guaranteed to more than satisfy a mixed crowd.

Footnote to Parents
A medium level of tension often throughout means this thriller is better to be seen for high-schoolers onwards, and with an adult guardian for anyone 12-15 years of age. Not much else, apart from some language and violence in The Gift.

Moviedoc wishes to thank Village Roadshow for the complimentary in-season double pass to see The Gift.
