123 minutes, Biography Drama, M
In 2009, an article titled “Game Brain” was published in the GQ magazine by Jeanne Marie Laskas, an American writer, journalist and professor. Although she later went on to write a book based on that article, this new biography drama starring Will Smith, is based on that original article. CONCUSSION, written for the screen by its Director Peter Landesman (writer of KILL THE MESSENGER), is the story of how pathologist Dr Bennett Omalu (Smith) discovered ground-breaking new facts surrounding the real effects of repeated concussions suffered by NFL footballers after he conducts an autopsy on a former star of the sport.

Rules of the Game
Rule Number 1 – Do not dismiss seeing CONCUSSION because it is marketed as or looks like a sports drama. The incredibly popular sport of NFL serves as the mere foundation in which to base its completely fascinating true story.
Rule Number 2 – Do not consider avoiding CONCUSSION due to its Oscars snub. Although its authenticity and quality are not in the same league as recent releases SPOTLIGHT or TRUMBO, and therefore the snub is understandable, the resounding goodwill always at the fore in raising awareness of its case and the dedication to finding & revealing the truth are inspiring and invaluable.
Rule Number 3 – Do not be put off CONCUSSION because it was not the Box Office success predicted in the US. Will Smith’s controlled and precise performance is some of the best work he has done throughout his career and is worth the price of admission alone. He maintains the required accent quite effortlessly too.
Rule Number 4 – Perhaps we currently have biographical film overload in our cinemas. CONCUSSION is no knock-out, and I do highly recommend other similarly-themed films slightly above this, but rules are rules and my ruling is to ensure this important and immersive biography drama is seen, particularly by the same audience that appreciate true stories.

Footnote to Parents
Thematic material that shows some disturbing images and infrequent coarse language – CONCUSSION is suitable for an audience from 13 years of age. Just be extra-conscious for those with a weaker stomach to medical scenes.
Moviedoc wishes to thank Harriet from Roadshow Films, Roadshow Films and Village Cinema, Jam Factory for the invitation to the Media Screening of CONCUSSION.
