135 minutes, Drama
A very tenderly rendered production, SUNSET SONG is poetically written and is often discoursed and presented as though it were a performed on a stage. Easy on the eyes yet not so likely to overwhelm your engagement or senses, it is the significant life-changing events that take place in Chris’s life and their aftermath that become the focal point to your level of involvement in this film as it gradually progresses. Supporting the trajectory of her story is a strong performance from Agyness Deyn, who tends to improve the longer this movie runs. Screenplay writer and director Terrence Davies (THE HOUSE OF MIRTH and THE DEEP BLUE SEA) on the other hand, has a few minor difficulties conveying the time span that has lapsed between scenes throughout, which becomes a problem during the final chapter. As World War 1 descends, the lack of development that ought to be invested in further major changes undoubtedly limits evoking the genuine emotion a patient audience are deserving of.
