124 minutes, Russian Action/Adventure with English Subtitles
To those outside of the world’s largest country, Russia is known for many things. Cheesy action/adventure movies are not one them! However, FLIGHT CREW, a remake of the 1979 Soviet disaster film AIR CREW, may just very well change that! Not convinced? No problem, read on! We may be spoiled for choice when it comes to a selection of brainless, over-the-top and guilty-pleasure action movies, almost always courtesy of Hollywood. But I don’t believe that America (or any other country in the world) has ever produced a disaster film quite like FLIGHT CREW. Here is what you can expect – A flight on its way to South East Asia, being navigated by a freshman pilot, makes an emergency landing at the Aleutian Islands to rescue civilians. From what? An Earthquake that has just devastated the tiny volcanic island. And just as Mother Nature herself has ordered, this Earthquake has triggered a volcanic eruption. Should the plane ever leave the tarmac, a God almighty storm and a shortage of fuel awaits!

As you may have fathomed by that revealing timeline of events, FLIGHT CREW is as unapologetically contrived and corny as a movie can be. And all the more fun for being so.
In fact, I’m sure the writers behind the fast & furious chain will be keenly watching for ideas towards further instalments! The first 45 minutes (or so) of FLIGHT CREW focuses on grounding its lead characters and their relationships, which is just as exciting as hearing the safety demonstrations on-board and delays our scheduled flight into disaster-ville a little too long. But immediately upon disembarking, a non-stop action ride of extravagant proportions ensues. The first ever Russian movie to be partly filmed using IMAX cameras may be cheesy in nature, yet there is nothing off in its impressive display of the visual carnage and thrills & by its sheer commitment to produce triumphantly entertaining fun. Even the Russians thought so, evident by FLIGHT CREW finishing in the top six for all-time money-earners at the box office!
