Today we kick of awards season in Hollywood with the Golden Globes. Noted as being a little left of field compared to the other more conservative awards, personally the Globes are one of my favourites.
Today I’m focusing solely on the film side of the awards, with a few Movie Maven predictions, and maybe a few that I’m quietly cheering for.
And here we go:
Best Motion Picture – Drama
Nominees:
Bohemian Rhapsody
If Beale Street Could Talk
And the winner is…….

It will be a close race between A Star Is Born and Bohemian Rhapsody, but I think A Star Is Born might just get the nod on this one. It’s a cracking category though, with none of the films feeling out of place.
And the actual winner is:
Bohemian Rhapsody
Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Nominees:
Green Book
Mary Poppins Returns
And the winner is…….

Another close category and could go either way with Vice or The Favourite. Perhaps Vice will prove to be a little too divisive for HFPA voters, but it would be a deserving winner.
And the actual winner is:
Green Book
(a Moviedoc review to be published closer to the Australian release date)
Best Motion Picture – Animated
Nominees:
Isle Of Dogs
Incredibles 2
Mirai
Ralph Breaks The Internet
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
And the winner is…….

After waiting 14 years for a sequel, fans weren’t disappointed by the latest Disney Pixar creation. If voters opt for a more artistic endeavour, Wes Anderson’s Isle Of Dogs may just take home the bacon.
And the actual winner is:
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama
Nominees:
Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born
Lucas Hedges – Boy Erased
John David Washington – Blackkklansman
Rami Malek – Bohemian Rhapsody
Willem Dafoe – At Eternity’s Gate
And the winner is…….

In any other year Bradley Cooper would be a shoe in, and he might still walk away with the award, but Rami Malek was next level in his depiction of Freddie Mercury.
And the actual winner is:
Rami Malek (one point Gryffindor)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
Nominees:
Glenn Close – The Wife
Lady Gaga – A Star Is Born
Melissa McCarthy – Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Nicole Kidman – Destroyer
Rosamund Pike – A Private War
And the winner is…….

Is Gaga the best performer in this category? No…that honour goes to Glenn Close in The Wife, but that’s not to say that Gaga wasn’t fantastic either. I just think that The Wife isn’t fresh in the minds of HFPA voters, and they always seem to love a singer-turned-actor over a veteran performer at these awards. Interestingly in any other year you’d almost say the Melissa McCarthy was a certainty too. Strong category.
And the actual winner is:
Glenn FREAKING Close!!!!! (so happy to be wrong)
Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Nominees:
Christian Bale – Vice
John C. Reilly – Stan & Ollie
Lin-Manuel Miranda – Mary Poppins Returns
Robert Redford – The Old Man and The Gun
Viggo Mortensen – Green Book
And the winner is…….

Head and shoulders above the rest, probably the easiest category to pick following his transformative turn as Dick Cheney. It won’t be so easy when we get to the Oscars though when he’s lumped in with Cooper and Malek.
And the actual winner is:
Christian Bale
Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy
Nominees:
Charlize Theron – Tully
Constance Wu – Crazy Rich Asians
Elsie Fisher – Eighth Grade
Emily Blunt – Mary Poppins Returns
Olivia Colman – The Favourite
And the winner is…….
![]()
The second easiest category to pick, Olivia Colman in a landslide. Charlize Theron was commendable in Tully, but the nomination is a win in itself for the film. Elsie Fisher is garnering rave reviews for Eighth Grade but Colman puts in one of the best performances of the decade in The Favourite.
And the actual winner is:
Olivia Colman
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Nominees:
Adam Driver – Blackkklansman
Richard E. Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Mahershala Ali – Green Book
Sam Rockwell – Vice
Timothée Chalamet – Beautiful Boy
And the winner is…….

Ok I’ll admit that this one is a bit of a hit and hope, rather than a genuine prediction. In another incredibly competitive category where any one of the nominees would be a deserving winner, it’s Richard E. Grant that I hope takes home the prize. Incredible in Can You Ever Forgive Me? but also after such a rich body of work, it would be great to see him finally recognised. That being said, Mahershala Ali is a more likely bet to win.
And the actual winner is:
Mahershala Ali (I’m going to count this as correct as we knew it was going to happen. Hugs to Richard E. Grant though)
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Nominees:
Emma Stone – The Favourite
Claire Foy – First Man
Amy Adams – Vice
Rachel Weisz – The Favourite
Regina King – If Beale Street Could Talk
And the winner is…….
![]()
If Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz don’t steal votes from each other, it’s Stone who should prevail for The Favourite. If they do steal votes however, it could be Amy Adams in a Steven Bradbury like victory. It wouldn’t be the worst result either as she was tremendous in Vice.
And the actual winner is:
Regina King (we were right about there being a Bradbury, just picked the wrong one. A review of If Beale Street Could Talk will also be published closer to the Australian release date)
Best Director – Motion Picture
Nominees:
Adam McKay – Vice
Alfonso Cuarón – Roma
Bradley Cooper – A Star Is Born
Peter Farrelly – Green Book
Spike Lee – Blackkklansman
And the winner is…….

Another tight race, but the directorial debut of Bradley Cooper is a standout effort. Alfonso Cuarón or Adam McKay may edge him out though.
And the actual winner is:
Alfonso Cuarón
All in all it’s shaping up to be a cracking awards season….now let the games begin.
