For nearly three decades Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy entertained audiences world-wide. One of the first A-list slapstick duos to gain recognition on the silver screen post the silent era, Laurel and Hardy were heralded by critics and fans alike. It’s a testament to them both that almost a hundred years after they first graced the screen, their legacy and craft will live on for a new generation of fans thanks to the efforts of Stan & Ollie.

A quaint little step back in time accompanied by a poignant look at the end of an entertainers career, Stan & Ollie proves to be nostalgic and at times moving, which is a huge credit to its two stars (Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly).

The film focuses on the tail end of the comedy duo’s career and also explores the issues that the two faced in their relationship with regards to professional differences. But the underlying theme here is the devastating reality that every star faces when they must acknowledge that their star is burning out.

Despite having once been one of the biggest draw cards on the silver screen, by 1953 Laurel and Hardy were relegated to a series of music hall performances in the UK, playing to a sea of empty seats. No longer able to rely on their established fame, the two were forced to spruik their craft to generate enough ticket sales to continue the show, learning a lot about themselves in the process.

There is a certain level of awkwardness when watching the film, but in a somewhat heartbreaking way. Like watching your Dad trying to be ‘cool’, to see a legend fighting for their last wedge of relevance is an uncomfortable experience. But through that discomfort, there is something achingly beautiful about their story. Managing to maintain your dignity while scrapping for the spotlight is no easy feat.

Coogan and Reilly were the perfect choices for the roles, and embodied everything that made Laurel and Hardy great. Their respect for their subject matter was obvious, creating the perfect homage. Stan & Ollie will definitely appeal more to the older audiences who might have grown up with Laurel and Hardy movies still getting a run on television, but it will also appeal to anyone with a genuine love of cinema and the people that pioneered the medium.
