Director
Richard Stanley

Starring
Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson and Madeleine Arthur

In this trippy adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft’s short story of the same name, Color Out Of Space is a throwback for lovers of vintage sci-fi/horror. In the vein of movies like The Blob or Them, this time we have a strange colour emitted from a meteorite that lands in the front yard of an American families rural property. First we see the colour, then strange things start to happen….seriously, that’s the whole premise of the film.

As laughable as it sounds, it’s actually a fairly well put together, nostalgic little journey. Nicolas Cage is at his weird best as the eccentric Dad who moved his family to the country to raise alpacas and grow tomatoes, and who is now slowly losing his grip on reality in the midst of the extra terrestrial shenanigans playing out in his home. I think this is the niche that Cage needs to stick to from here on in. There is an eeriness that never quite leads to full on frights, so if you like something kooky, but also want to sleep without the hallway light on, then this is a solid choice to accompany your isolation popcorn. And if you love weird stuff like demonic animals being spliced with humans, then this is definitely the film for you.

Color Out of Space Ending and Easter Eggs Explained | Collider

I had the pleasure of seeing this film during its limited cinema release back in February, and watched it on a whim knowing next to nothing about it. I think that’s probably the best way to go about it too. It was surprising in all the best ways.  Now it thankfully has found a home as a rental via Foxtel and is certainly worth the purchase price.
