When you see the likes of Kevin James and Joel McHale lining up in a horror movie, much like myself, you’d probably assume that this was going to have a comedic undertow. However, you would be wrong. Becky has only one real goal it would seem, and that is to shock its audience with its extreme gore.

The ‘Becky’ that the title refers to is a 12-year-old nightmare, with seemingly no redeeming qualities. She is angst ridden and angry over the death of her mother a year earlier and is intent on taking that rage out on everyone around her, including her browbeaten father, Jeff (Joel McHale). When Jeff surprises Becky with a trip to her late mother’s lakeside cabin, Becky becomes furious when Jeff has also invited his new girlfriend and her young son, causing Becky to storm off into the woods with her dog to sulk. In the background of all of this is a group of escaped prisoners, led by white supremacist Dominick (Kevin James, in an eerie change of pace for him). After escaping prison transport and stealing a car, Dominick and three fellow escapees arrive at the cabin in search of a mysterious key….yeeeaaah, that’s actually the plot; escapees, looking for a key…a key to what we do not know, and it’s never explained any better than that in the 93 minute runtime. From there the film turns into a typical hostage style horror, with the gore factor cranked up to 11, only this one also has an emo teen with roid-rage picking off grown ass men while the grown-ups make no sensible choices.

There are definitely things to like about the film. The uneasiness that comes from seeing the ‘King of Queens’ turned into a Nazi loving bad guy with no softness to him is strangely intriguing. As far as gory revenge-slashers go, this one has all the elements you want in it too. The main things that let the film down are the numerous plot holes and the extreme unlikability of the protagonist. When you actually find yourself cheering for the white supremacists, you know your character development has issues. If however, you are so over 2020 and just want to see some dudes get f**ked up, then this one needs to be on top of list of must-see’s.

Not the best film by a long margin, but definitely not the worst I’ve seen this year either. A good one to kill some time while we have an abundance of it.

  1. Hmm… sounds interesting and somewhat intriguing on the one hand, despite the film not being quite my palette, It gives an inviting temptation to watch it. Great description.
