Rose Matafeo, Matthew Lewis and Emily Barclay

When Auckland based arborist Zoe (Rose Matafeo) falls pregnant to her boyfriend Tim (Matt Lewis…aka Neville Longbottom) her life is turned upside down. Instead of heading to Canada to compete in the World Tree Climbing Championships, she is instead faced with prospect of being another one of her ‘boring Mummy friends’. While Tim gets busy preparing for baby, Zoe instead tries to get through a pre-baby bucket list of shenanigans, including an awkward three-way attempt with her best friend. Baby Done explores the panic that many first time parents feel when realizing that their life is about to change irrevocably, and that the window for spontaneous adventures is somewhat closing.

This smart and energetic Kiwi comedy isn’t like any other pregnancy film. Produced by Taika Waititi, there are obvious nods to his influence throughout Baby Done. The dry Kiwi humour is well balanced throughout and the supporting cast are used to perfection, including a small appearance by Rachel House (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) as a school Principal, but definitely channeling her inner Child Protective Services officer, Paula.

It’s hard to gauge the true merit of this film. I’ve got to admit, I thoroughly enjoyed it. But it’s hard to know whether that joy was due to the film actually being great, or that with the pandemic related closures of cinemas and the dearth of quality releases, any film that isn’t absolutely horrendous stands out like brain cell at a Republican convention. Either way though, audiences are probably feeling the exact same way, so let’s back this in as perfect escapism and an all-round good time.

So anyone who isn’t in Lockdown Victoria, get along to your local cinema and support our trans-tasman neighbours with this little gem of a film, as I’m sure we could all use a good laugh in 2020.
