If you’re looking for something to even remotely stimulate your intellect or a film that requires more than two brain cells rubbed together to comprehend, this might not be it. If instead you want something to make your eardrums bleed and to lower your IQ overall, then I think you might just be onto a winner.

The fourth film in the ‘MonsterVerse’ series, Godzilla vs. Kong is almost two stories in one. The first is an adventure trying to reunite Kong with his rightful home in Hollow Earth amongst the other Titans, and the other is a battle between Godzilla and a corrupt organization trying to create a super Titan which could bring about the destruction of mankind….oh and he’s also trying to kill Kong at the same time. These two pathways often lead to Godzilla and Kong facing off in fight scenes reminiscent of The Irishman….or basically any film that involves an elderly man trying to throw a punch. But to beef things up, the directors solution is to make it so damn loud that sure that it must mean that something exciting is happening….right?! The worst thing with that is, if you’re struggling to find anything to hold your interest in the paper thin plotline, you can’t even get a good kip in to make up for the time you’re losing watching this drivel.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not opposed to a simplistic popcorn movie, sometimes you need something mindless to experience some pure escapism. But this offering is so weak in every area that instead of enjoying the break from reality, you’re just angry that it’s wasting your time. The fact that actors like Alexander Skarsgård can spout off the cheesiest of dialogue and keep a straight face actually bemuses me.

If however you were a fan of the films predecessors; Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Kong: Skull Island, you probably know exactly what to expect here, and I’m sure you won’t mind this latest expedition one little bit. If (like myself) you’re a bit more indifferent to the genre/series, unfortunately this film won’t be the one to turn you into a convert.

Godzilla vs. Kong is in cinemas now….maybe take some ear plugs.
