Directed by Ruben Alves
Starring Alexandre Wetter, Pascale Arbillot, Thibault de Montalembert

Combining two of my loves, boxing and drag, Miss delivers a heart-warming, if not slightly predictable, delight.

Miss is a film about self-discovery and exploration, a film for dreamers, a film for anyone who has felt left out or misunderstood.

The film follows the story of Alex (Alexandre Wetter) in his gender discovery journey. Joined by his share house family of loveable misfits, Alex sets out to achieve his childhood ambition of becoming Miss France.

Miss gives a glimpse into what it is like for those who may not necessarily feel at home with the gender they were born with or raised as. It finds humour whilst dealing with very real situations of prejudice that are still present in our societies.

Wetter gives an exceptional performance in their premier acting role, something to be expected when filmmakers cast queer people as queer people (wow). Wetter is able to draw on their unique personal experience of being genderqueer, in a way a cisgendered actor never could. Wetter is also able to pay to the subtleties of queer experience, the shame, the hiding, the fear of ridicule – but also the warmth, love, closeness and sense of connection that exists within the queer community. It must also be said that Thibault de Montalembert was an absolute knock out in the supporting role of Lola, laughs aplenty!

I found this film quite touching and very entertaining.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Miss is showing in selected cinemas across Australia from August 12.
