Directed by Michael Sarnoski
Starring Nicolas Cage, Alex Wolff and Adam Arkin

Nicolas Cage stars as Robin, a reclusive truffle hunter living in the Oregonian wilderness with his trusty pig. He brings home the bacon, so to speak, by supplying the truffle he procures to the only person in the outside world he chooses to have contact with, Amir (Alex Wolff), a young man that drives a flashy car who sells the truffle himself to contemporary restaurants in Portland. When Robin’s pig is stolen one night, he heads to the city where he once lived and was very well known in search of his beloved pig and must confront the people and places from the life he left behind.

Pig certainly has all of the ingredients to be vicious, violent and to permit Nic Cage free will to turn anyone standing in the way of finding his pig into minced meat. It’s therefore important to note that Pig is seeking to derive something more meaningful rather than malicious from Robin’s search and features a much more subdued performance from Nicolas Cage, which is almost refreshing to see. While I’m pleased that Pig is more foreign and less familiar in how it goes about detailing its story and uncovering its depth and themes, I’m not convinced its overall execution really satisfies. To be frank, Pig is always slow-moving and strange. Some of its dialogue exchanges seem unrelated any part of the story and don’t make a great deal of sense either, which together with its slowness and strangeness make this a challenging film to constantly devote attention to. Fortunately, it is equally capable at surprising and fascinating. Particularly when Robin uses his knowledge of the city and its history when in search of his pig and the amount of depth the story and characters possess that unfolds in present time.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Pig is showing in selected cinemas across the parts of Australia not in lockdown from September 16.
