France, 1963. A bright and promising literature student is approaching the time of her final exams. Her aspirations to pursue a writing career are all but written off when she unexpectedly falls pregnant. During those early weeks, Anne (Anamaria Vartolomei) faces the reality of her impossible situation – be prepared to accept life as an unwed mother or secretly seek an illegal abortion. Based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Annie Ernaux, Happening chronicles Anne’s decision to go against the law.

Abortion. It was a contentious topic then. It still is now, despite being legal in more countries around the world than it was throughout the 1960’s. Happening has many strengths, one of which is its sole focus on the subject pursuing the abortion rather than being for or against its prohibition. This film is entirely dedicated to exploring Anne’s desperate search for options and the inevitable risks that result from pursuing them. Her isolation at having to confront everything without any support or guidance, the sheer hopelessness felt by the lack of narrowing options and the additional stress incurred by time itself. Audrey Diwan’s driven directing efforts catapult these deeply involving facets to the fore of her film and encourages viewers to also cast aside their judgement on the topic and of the protagonist. The use of 1.37 aspect ratio and the camerawork successfully narrows our focus to experiencing everything from Anne’s perspective. Another strength that must be mentioned is the casting and performance of Anamaria Vartolomei. Her progression of her character’s tension is pinpoint, and the nuances observed from the actress’ side profile are very effective.
This excellent film is, however, very confronting. So please consider the R18+ classification that has appropriately been applied before purchasing your ticket.
Happening (L’événement) is showing in selected cinemas across Australia from April 14th.
