85 minutes, Drama, MA15+

This local production follows a chapter in the life of 26-year-old musician Jamie, who’s part of a struggling band on the verge of a break-up. With no money, no girlfriend and now possibly no job and direction in life, Jamie is forced to make some life-changing decisions – will he back his passions and pursue them solo or play it safe and attempt to live a more mundane lifestyle?

Play It Safe - Film Still

PLAY IT SAFE, filmed in black and white, does an OK job of keeping Jamie’s journey a reasonable watch courtesy of some well-staged & acted realistic scenarios and creating a little curiosity as to where each decision made will lead him. Those who are musicians themselves, or part of a band, are more likely to relate to more of the material covered here. PLAY IT SAFE does experience its difficulties though – some clearly amateur acting, the unnecessary need for a highly annoying housemate to Jamie and no indication to the time lapsed between scenes in sync can’t go unnoticed and could have been avoided with better scripting and direction.
