Directed by Kelly Reichardt
Starring John Magaro, Orion Lee and Toby Jones
A delightfully wholesome story of an unlikely friendship, an ingenious, somewhat ridiculous plan and a prized dairy cow.
Following central characters Cookie (Magaro) and King-Lu (Lee), we are given insight into the simplicity of frontier life. The improbable pair come up with a questionable plan to spin their own gold, at a time when everyone was trying to earn a quick win. This slow moving, but good-natured story shows us that we can find connection in the most unlikely of places.
I really enjoyed the space and silence in this film. The long takes and simple narrative left space for genuine warmth and authenticity, even the film stock used left a golden glow in every frame. The playful chemistry between Magaro and Lee as our ridiculous heroes, was palpable.

If you’re looking for a heart-warming film that is suitable for all ages, this film is a quiet little gem, an understated masterpiece.
There is something in the gentleness with which Reichardt portrays this world, in a genre usually filled with hardened characters, intrigue and darkness, she has managed to avoid many of these typical trappings. Presenting a soft and subtle rendition of Jonathan Raymond’s fictional work, ‘The Half Life’.
I whole-heartedly recommend this film to you.
First Cow is showing in selected cinemas across Australia from April 29.
