Striking, violent, and vivid, The End of Oak Street combines elements of action, comedy, and horror to create a world of chaos, uncertainty, and prehistorical carnage, reminding us to have hope in the darkest of moments, even in a world that is far from our own. Mitchell’s recent project stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor as members of a family who are transported alongside their neighbourhood to a prehistoric world, full of predatory dinosaurs and unpredictable nightmares.

A time-warping sci-fi adventure film, the Platt family must learn to survive in an unpredictable world, untouched by humans. Dinosaurs were carefully curated and designed, ensuring historic accuracy and impressive CGI, whether covered in feather or fur. The soundscape proved even more impressive, boasting blood-curdling roars and boot-trembling tremors that terrified audiences and left them in constant awe. Mitchell’s first dinosaur-bound project can be compared to the Jurassic franchise, creating a perfect blend of fear and excitement while also excelling in comedic timing.

The End of Oak Street carries moments of tender humanity, simple and warm, that remind us of the loneliness, unsureness, and confusion we would likely experience if placed in the shoes of the Platt family. Crying in the car to a melodic pop song, taking a photo in front of dinosaurs, crushing on your neighbours, arguing with your partner, Mitchell shows that humanity will thrive in almost any condition. Additionally, this film is dangerously realistic, its unpredictability leaving the audience on their toes, unsure of what will follow and constantly rooting for the family’s survival and happiness.

A heart-warming watch, The End of Oak Street curates a dinosaur experience that is unlike its predecessors, creating a unique blend of warmth, fear, and excitement. Mitchell creates a world that feels impossibly large and impactful despite the small neighbourhood in which the family is trapped in. Yet, amongst the violence, uncertainty, and prehistoric chaos, it is the ordinary moments that remain the most human. The End of Oak Street reminds us that even when the world becomes completely unrecognisable, the simple things that connect us to one another is what keeps us alive.
